Why we have changed the price of Redundant Block Storage

July 2, 2026
Transparency has always been one of our core values.
So when we increase prices, we believe it's important to explain why.
Nobody likes paying more. We understand that.

In the past few days we've received some questions from Big Disk customers about the recently communicated price increase of Redundant Block Storage (formerly Big Disk).
Some of you have rightly asked why this sudden increase is necessary.
So, this article answers any questions you may have.

The short version of the answer?

This price increase is unavoidable. The price of storage hardware has more than doubled in the last few months. At the same time, we see an increase in usage of our storage platform, likely due to our lowest prices. These changes are required to keep our platform reliable, performant and sustainable.

Storage hardware has become much more expensive

Cloud storage isn't just software. Behind every virtual disk are enterprise SSDs, HDDs, storage controllers, networking equipment and redundant infrastructure running in professional data centres.

During the past year, the market for enterprise memory and storage has changed dramatically.
Hardware costs have gone up with almost 300%. (source: PCpartpicker

Gartner confirms that the industry is facing an unprecedented rise in memory costs. They expect combined DRAM and SSD prices to increase by approximately 130% during 2026, driven largely by global demand for AI infrastructure and limited manufacturing capacity. (source: Gartner

This isn't limited to cloud providers like Tilaa.
Major hardware vendors, PC manufacturers and datacentre operators are all experiencing the same market conditions, with increased costs eventually being reflected in their products and services.

We delayed this change for as long as possible

One thing we'd like to emphasize: we're not increasing prices overnight simply because the market did.

We've absorbed rising infrastructure costs for years because we know stable pricing matters to our customers. However, there comes a point when continuing to do so means compromising future investments. That is not a trade-off we're willing to make. Instead, we'd rather be transparent about why prices change than quietly reduce quality, performance or support.

The most competitively priced provider

We also wanted to verify our prices before communicating it. That is why we checked market prices to see where we stood. Below is a comparison of publicly available SSD block storage pricing.

As the comparison shows, our previous pricing was significantly below the market average.
Even after the increase, our pricing remains significantly lower than many well-known European cloud providers while including redundancy as standard.

Our extremely competitive pricing is ironically a large part of the reason why we need to invest in additional hardware. We’ve seen explosive growth in the last few years, which means we’ll have to invest now to ensure reliable operations.

Transparency remains our promise

Price increases are never pleasant. We don’t like them either.
But we believe it's better to explain them openly than to hide them behind complicated pricing models or reduce the quality of the platform.

We will continue investing in infrastructure that is:
  • Reliable
  • Fast
  • Secure
  • Hosted in Europe
  • Transparently priced
Because that is the platform we'd want to build on ourselves and the platform we think will help your business.

A new price comes with better specs

The product isn't just getting a new name. Big Disk becomes Redundant Block Storage, which better reflects what the platform actually delivers.

Every volume includes:
  • Built-in redundancy as standard
  • Enterprise-grade storage infrastructure
  • Continued investments in platform reliability
  • Ongoing improvements to storage performance

And soon, all customers will benefit from:
  • 5.000+ IOPS on SSD storage
  • 500+ IOPS on HDD storage
These improvements are only possible because we continue investing in the underlying infrastructure.
